Program Descriptions

Students need to choose one out of eight topics and the two-week course will focus only on this topic.

Computer Programing Design ( QS World University Rankings by Computer Science #5 )
Immerse in C++, the powerful but complex programming language embraced by cutting-edge coders, and participate in a variety of engaging, innovative coding projects tailored to your level of proficiency. By the end of the program, students will not only have produced original computer programs, but familiarize themselves with the standards for success in higher education by participating in discussions, workshops, and other academic work. In this class, students will focus on developing their knowledge of C++ computer coding platform and programming language, developing essential skills for planning, writing, publishing, and disseminating original computer programss and participating in a variety of creative coding projects such as building an original computer game.
Innovative Engineering Challenge ( QS World University Rankings by Engineering and Technology #7 )
In this intensive 2-week course, you will explore what science has to say about innovation: its origins, when and how it strikes, what to do once it does, and what to do if it doesn’t. Through a variety of hands-on project-based workshops, you’ll explore research and theories of innovation, and see how they apply to some of the great creative minds of our time. As you do so, you will practice the skills crucial for success in higher education, refine your English language usage, and, just maybe, come up with an idea that will change the world. The projects fell into two basic categories: - Engineering (constructing towers and aircraft out of non-traditional building materials) - Business (designing and presenting ideas for consumer products) And tested the students' creativity, leadership, ability to work in teams, apply knowledge they learned from experts, and express their ideas while meeting the standards of academic communication at Berkeley.
Business Communication and Strategy ( QS World University Rankings by Business & Management Studies #13 )
In this intensive 2-week course, you will explore the topics that matter most in business communication, from networking, negotiating, interviewing, marketing and more, through a variety of hands-on, interactive, content-based classroom activities. You will also improve your language abilities and practice the skills essential for academic success in higher education.
Psychology and Human Behavior ( QS World University Rankings by Psychology #5 )
Why do we humans do the things we do? Why do we like certain foods, forms of art, products, and people? Why do men and women behave differently, or have different outcomes? To answer these questions, we turn to the field of psychology. But within that broad field, the answers aren’t always the same. Social psychologists, for instance, argue that our preferences and behaviors are best explained by our culture and upbringing. A new field called evolutionary psychology challenges that point of view, arguing that behaviors are innate, and products of the choices of our ancestors. These are compelling arguments, but rife with controversy. In this intensive 2-week course, you will explore the latest scientific research in the field of psychology, enhance your understanding of human behavior, and develop essential skills for success in higher education as you do.
Introduction to International Relations ( QS World University Rankings by Politics #10 )
Students will explore competing for theoretical perspectives on globalization, the link between globalization and fragmentation, and how nation-states create security and mitigate conflict. Coursework is grounded in task-based exercises and real-life case studies that allow students to apply what they learn to the issues in international relations that interest them most. In this class, students will learn how to develop an understanding of key theoretical models for predicting and analyzing interactions between nation-states, explore trends in international political, economic, military, and cultural exchanges, investigate real-world examples of conflict, crisis, and cooperation, on topics such as economic growth, nuclear strategy, environmental protection, cyber security, and armed conflict, put their theoretical knowledge to the test as they participate in challenging, hands-on projects and reports centered on the international relations events that interest you most, and develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills by participating in a variety of individual and group-work tasks.
Journalism and Effective Storytelling ( QS World University Rankings by Social Sciences #7 )
Students will learn how to identify newsworthy events, conduct research and interviews, and present what they find in a way that will inform and engage diverse audiences. Coursework focuses on task-based projects that have students applying what they learn as they investigate and write about the current events that matter to them. In this class, students will learn how to acquire techniques for selecting, researching, and presenting news stories, drawing from both traditional and modern methodologies, develop the four'c's of effective communication: clarity, coherence, concision, and concreteness, familiarize themselves with the best practices regarding the legal and ethical issues that journalists face and explore the various platforms for publication in a digital world and strategies for developing credentials.Storytelling is essential in students' college essays and in presentations that can apply to all the majors. Good storytelling is a plus for students' college applications, especially for the schools that don't require SAT/ACT, such as UC schools.
Fundamental of Marketing ( QS World University Rankings by Business & Management #13 )
Students will immerse themselves in the creative but challenging field of marketing and explore the essential steps to creating customer loyalty. Develop a practical understanding of market analysis, branding, communication campaigns, consumer behavior, and perception. Then, apply what the students learn as they conduct strategic analysis and propose solutions to real-world business challenges. In this class, students will learn how to acquire techniques to identify target customers and their needs, familiarize themselves with the steps to designing, implementing, and maintaining a communication campaign, develop strategies for building brand equity, identifying and responding to shifts in consumer behavior and perception, and managing disruptions, and participate in a variety of creative projects that allow students to respond to real-world business challenges and apply their theoretical knowledge.
Principal of Powerful Photography ( QS World University Rankings by Arts and Humanities #4 )
Students will develop a coherent personal style and artistic voice and refine their rhetorical skills through academic workshops focused on effective communication. Students will also participate in fieldwork activities, peer evaluation sessions, and a capstone multimodal final project that showcases your photography skills, ideas and beliefs, and your ability to communicate them through text and visuals. In this class, students will learn how to familiarize themselves with the key strategies and principles that experienced photographers use to give power to their work, develop their technical ability and knowledge of camera mechanics, identify how form supports content in photography, and apply this knowledge as they analyze artwork and its emotional and intellectual effect on viewers, and participate in a variety of creative photography projects that allow students to explore, interact with, and find meaning in their environment. Students will work on a digital portfolio as their final program work and present it on showcase day.

往届学生感言

I have benefited a lot from the excellent academics of UC Berkeley, but, as a matter of fact, social life, cultural shock, and travel also played a great role during my days in Berkeley. It has so much fun to attend the event held by IPCP. In the grand Welcome Reception, I made friends with students from Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, and Germany. All of these are something that we have never experienced in Chinese schools.
- Yan Zhang, China

This has been an amazing experience for me and I would like to thank everyone for allowing Scotch to go.
- Sean, Scotland

When I first arrived at Berkely Summer School, I was feeling anxious about whether I would fit in or not. However, as soon as I arrived, I felt at ease, as the friendly staff guided me. I immediately made new friends and started to gain a lot of interest in the topics I was learning at BSS, as the teachers were experts in their fields.
- Nicole, USA

我的老师是一个能够将兴趣,知识,幽默融合在一起的好老师,他通过具体的参数和图示帮助我们理解他的每一个想法,如果满分是 10 分,我给 12 分。
-Vladimir,
